ESPN College Game Day was at TCU’s campus on saturday for the football game vs Utah. Unlike Boise State, who actually hired a PR firm to help them get into a BCS bowl, TCU’s football team does the work for not only themselves, but the school itself.
The reason why football is relevant to journalism in this case is because Boise State actually hired a PR firm in order to make their school more popular and to make sure they were getting plenty of exposure. This was in order to sway the decision as to who would be the non-BCS contender for BCS bowls.
If the team isn’t good enough to get votes on its own, then it obviously doesn’t deserve to be the team chosen. The school also said once TCU beat BYU then their focus changed to getting a bid to a good bowl, but this was probably only to save face for hiring a PR firm to begin with.
TCU’s football team is the university’s PR firm. They have given TCU much more coverage then previously received and have created such hype amongst sports fans and people in the nation alike. Football may be just a game to some people, but its a pretty big deal to Fort Worth.
